JUMPSTYLE

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is Jumpstyle?

The Jumpstyle is an electronic dance style that originated in Europe and combines energetic steps, synchronised jumps and a defiant attitude. Over time, this movement has become a cultural expression within hard dance music, practised both individually and in groups.

Origins in Belgium and the Netherlands

Jumpstyle was born in the late 90s in Belgium, especially in the Flanders region, but soon spread to the Netherlands, where it boomed. The term “jump” comes from the dance's characteristic jumps, while “style” refers to its evolution as a form of personal expression.

The influence of hard dance music

This style took hold as part of the rise of Hardstyle and Hard trance. The connection with these electronic genres was key to growing the community, especially through festivals and music videos.

Key Elements of Jumpstyle

Jumpstyle is characterised by:

  • Powerful jumps to the rhythm of the music.

  • Symmetrical movements with legs and arms.

  • Choreographed sequences or freestyle.

  • A defiant, confident attitude.

These features make it accessible yet visually striking.

Basic Jumpstyle Steps (Step by Step)

1. The Basic Kick

This is the fundamental step. It consists of a small jump on one leg while the other throws a controlled kick forward.

  • Start standing, with your feet together.

  • Jump slightly forward on your right foot while gently kicking with your left.

  • Land on both feet.

  • Repeat the move, alternating legs.

2. The Side Kick

  • Do a small sideways jump.

  • As you land, push one leg out to the side.

  • Land while keeping your balance.

3. Turn Step (basic turn)

  • Jump diagonally.

  • Turn your body 180 degrees during the jump.

  • Land precisely in the new position.

⚠️ Tip: To learn these steps, it is essential to practise with music with a steady rhythm, between 140-150 BPM.

Evolution and Global Popularity of Jumpstyle

Although it started as an underground phenomenon, Jumpstyle gained international recognition in the early 2000s. Channels like YouTube drove its globalisation, with millions of views of choreographies and tutorials.

In countries such as Germany, France and Poland, the movement developed local variants. Even in South America, active communities of jumpers have formed, showing its power to connect people globally.

Jumpstyle Fun Facts

  • There are international Jumpstyle competitions.

  • Some groups have mixed it with Shuffle and Hakken, creating hybrid styles.

  • Some teams create synchronised choreographies in the style of an urban dance crew.
